She was married five times, twice to the composer Kurt Weill, first in 1926, with whom she emigrated to the USA 1935. She appeared in several of the Brecht-Weill operas, notably Die Dreigroschenoper/The Threepenny Opera 1928. Her plain looks and untrained singing voice brought added realism to her stage roles.
